A New Era for Silver Jewellery
If you’ve ever hesitated before buying silver jewellery, wondering “Is this real 💍?”, you’re not alone. Until now, silver hallmarking in India lacked digital verification — leaving many customers confused.
But on 1st September 2025, a new system came into effect that changes silver shopping forever. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced HUID-based hallmarking for silver, making every hallmarked piece digitally traceable. This upgrade means more trust, more transparency, and no more guesswork when you buy silver.
What Exactly Is Changing?
1️⃣ Upgrade to IS 2112:2025
The old hallmarking standard (IS 2112:2014) is now replaced with IS 2112:2025.
This brings silver hallmarking in line with gold’s digital hallmarking standards.
2️⃣ What’s in the New Hallmark?
Every hallmarked silver jewellery or article will now carry three components:
✅ BIS logo with the word “SILVER”
✅ Purity Grade – one of 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990, 999 (✨ 958 and 999 are newly added)
✅ HUID (Hallmarking Unique Identification) – a 6-character alphanumeric code, unique to every single item
👉 Earlier hallmarking had four components (BIS mark, purity, Assay Centre ID, jeweller’s ID), but no digital traceability.

With effect from 1st September 2025, only the new scheme will be applicable. Under the revised system, each silver article will carry the BIS logo with the word SILVER, the fineness grade, and a unique HUID.@jagograhakjago pic.twitter.com/BIhfQtj8wp
3️⃣ Digital Traceability via BIS Care App
Now, each HUID can be instantly checked on the BIS Care App:
Article type (ring, bangle, necklace, etc.)
Purity grade (e.g., 925 sterling silver)
Date of hallmarking
Assaying & Hallmarking Centre details (name, recognition number, location)
Jeweller’s registration info
This means your jewellery is verified and traceable right from the source.
4️⃣ Voluntary but Encouraging
Hallmarking of silver jewellery is voluntary as of September 1, 2025.
However, leading jewellers (including Zaishree 💎) are adopting this standard early to build customer confidence.
Why This Matters to You
✅ Shop with Confidence – You’ll know exactly what you’re buying.
✅ Prevent Fraud – Spot fake or low-purity silver before spending.
✅ Easy Verification – Just scan or enter the HUID in the BIS Care App.
✅ Higher Trust – Adds value for gifting, resale, and long-term peace of mind.

✨ Done — your silver is verified!
Backstory: Why This Update Now?
Silver hallmarking in India began in 2005, but the system lacked digital records.
Until now, hallmarking covered only six purity grades (800, 835, 900, 925, 970, 990) and carried four static marks.
In FY 2024–25 alone, 32+ lakh silver articles were hallmarked across 230 BIS-recognised centres in 87 districts.
The new system introduces traceability and accountability on par with global standards, protecting customers from cheap imitations.
What is Hallmarking?
Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the purity of precious metals. In India, it is governed by BIS under IS 15820.
For consumers, hallmarking is not just a mark — it’s a guarantee of purity and trust.
Wrap-Up: What to Remember
📅 Sept 1, 2025 — Silver hallmarking goes digital with HUID.
🔍 Look for BIS logo + Purity Grade + HUID code on every hallmarked silver item.
📱 Verify anytime using the BIS Care App.
💍 At Zaishree Jewellery, all our silver jewellery is crafted in 925 sterling silver and will carry BIS HUID hallmarking for your complete peace of mind.
👉 Bottom line: This update marks a big leap for silver buyers. Now, every piece of silver can be traced, trusted, and treasured — just as it should be.
